Complex for OAPs To be Refurbished

A DERBY construction company has been appointed to refurbish a complex which provides accommodation for older people.

UK Construction, on Pride Park, will carry out the work on behalf of Derby Homes at Rebecca House, in Uttoxeter Old Road.

The complex provides accommodation primarily for people aged over 60, who receive Disability Living Allowance.

The building will be upgraded and refurbished and the communal areas improved. Sixteen bedsits will be converted into eight two-bedroom flats and the warden's house will be turned into two one-bedroom flats.

The refurbishment work is expected to be completed by late October.

Phil Davies, chief executive of Derby Homes, said: "This will allow us to make better use of Rebecca House and help us provide the kind of accommodation our tenants expect for modern living."

WINNING new contracts has not been the problem for Pride Park firm UK Construction in the first six months of 2010.

Director Jaz Sahota said: "Having won a couple of tenders we're still trying to set up new contracts.

"There has been a little bit of an upturn in the market although the real issue facing us is that clients are struggling to get funding.

"We're also finding that bigger firms are coming down a level to compete for smaller contracts and it has been quite cutthroat," he said.

A DERBY construction company could set up a second office in London after securing a £1.7m contract to build a housing development in the capital.

UK Construction, in Brunel Park Way, Pride Park, has secured to build apartments and town houses in Sutton.

It is the first time the firm has secured a contract in London and it is now hoping to win more on the back of it. The company is currently in the running for another contract in Islington and is now considering setting up a second office in the capital to gain further business opportunities.

UK Construction have  been responsible for some major developments in and around Derby, Nottingham and the Midlands, including a new service station at the junction of the A50 and A38, close to Toyota's Burnaston plant.

It was also responsible for building Brunel Business Park, on Pride Park, where the company is now based. As well as commercial developments, the firm has carried out several residential projects, including Ravens Ridge in Breadsall.

According to director Jaz Sahota, the construction market has remained relatively dormant for the past two years, but he is hoping the firm's successful tender for the project in Sutton could pave the way for further deals.

He said: "It has been a tough couple of years. One of the main problems has been the fact that as businesses have struggled or gone under, we've had to chase money that has been owed. At times we've found ourselves in some precarious positions.

"But we are delighted to be doing work in London. This is the furthest afield that we have won work and we will be looking at setting up another office to take advantage of future contracts in the capital."

Locally, Mr Sahota said that activity was still down – which had led the company, which employs 13 people and several contractors, to take on several smaller-scale projects.

He said: "We are essentially set up to take on multi-million-pound projects, but to help with cash flow we have been taking on barn conversions, renovations and refurbishments. It's important to keep working. "Things are still relatively quiet – but we're hopeful that things will pick up soon."

Mr Sahota said that another challenge for the company had been the apparent lack of support from banks. He said: "It has been a real problem finding finance. Personally, I've not seen any evidence of the banks coming back to the market and we have been pursuing other avenues."
